STITCHING FOR FREEDOM
Advocating for social change one stitch at a time.
WHAT
Stitching For Freedom is a community art initiative rooted in healing justice and community care.
Founded by Nina Franco, Stitching For Freedom uses needle and thread to advocate for people who are disproportionately affected by systemic racism, LGBTQIA+phobia, ableism and anti-migration laws.
Stitching For Freedom facilitates participatory art experiences for people of all abilities and needs. Everyone can engage, create, and thrive through art.
Through interactive workshops and creative art projects, Stitching for Freedom blends social justice with expressive arts to create engaging spaces that inspire playfulness and creativity, while challenging traditional hierarchical approaches to art and learning.
Participants use different art forms, from photography, and sewing, to printmaking, to unpack issues such as children’s rights, gender discrimination, mass incarceration, and gentrification.
